Snow Country, 「雪国」, Yukiguni Image 1

From Brushed in Light: Calligraphy in East Asian Cinema by Markus Nornes

  • Nobel Prize winning novelist Kawabata Yasunari himself wrote the calligraphy for the title of this adaptation of his novel. He signed the piece on the right hand side, adding his seal. The peculiar way he drew the second character country 国, using only two strokes for the surrounding lines, gives the sense of a closed in space.
