The Voyageur

From Canoes: A Natural History in North America by Mark Neuzil and Norman Sims

  • The voyageur’s knit cap kept him warm over the cold nights on the trail. The pipe in this painting is probably clay; the voyageurs took hourly breaks during which they smoked. They often measured distances based on the number of pipe breaks between points.
