From The Director's Prism: E. T. A. Hoffmann and the Russian Theatrical Avant-Garde by Dassia N. Posner

  • Carl Friedrich Thiele adapted this etching as plate 4 (chapter 4, opp. p. 133) in the first edition of E. T. A. Hoffmann’s Princess Brambilla: A Capriccio after Jacques Callot (1821). Alexander Tairov used this same etching to inspire the carnival mise-en-scène in Princess Brambilla: A Kamerny Theatre Capriccio, after Hoffmann (1920) at the Moscow Kamerny Theatre.

Etching foreground: two male figures in half masks face each other, one holding a wooden sword and cape (left), the other playing a guitar (right).

Etching background: a man bows to kiss a woman’s hand.
