From Canoes: A Natural History in North America by Mark Neuzil and Norman Sims

  • Artists worked from written accounts describing the moment of contact with native tribes and Champlain’s ship. This study for an oil painting used Champlain’s images of the natives and their crafts. Reid, noted for historic works such as this, was president of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and a longtime proponent of the arts in Canada.
