Florida Dugout Canoe and Typical Timucua Houses

From Canoes: A Natural History in North America by Mark Neuzil and Norman Sims

  • The Timucua people of Florida used dugout canoes to transport produce to storehouses built of mud and stones. This 1591 engraving by Theodor de Bry is based on drawings from a manuscript by Jacques le Moyne de Morgues, who accompanied the 1564 Huguenot expedition to Florida.
