Cane Toad Muster

From A Song to Save the Salish Sea: Musical Performance as Environmental Activism by Mark Pedelty

  • Dana Lyons' song "Cane Toad Muster", written about the invasive cane toad species in Australia. The cane toad (native to South America) was introduced to Queensland, Australia by sugar cane farmers in the 1930's who thought that the cane toads would eat the cane beetles, who were eating the sugar cane. Instead, the cane toads ate everything else, and because they are so poisonous, any animal that ate the cane toad died. Dana toured the Kimberley in Northwestern Australia with the Kimberley Toad Busters, an environmental group working to slow the advance of the cane toads across Australia.
