Digging a gun emplacement, 21 August 1918. Even with the growing Allied superiorities in artillery and in the air that were apparent by mid-1918, it was still important to dig in. Camouflage was also important: the gun immediately behind the men, and the shells to the right rear, are under netting. Source: IWM photo Q8238.
