From Canoes: A Natural History in North America by Mark Neuzil and Norman Sims

  • The Rice Lake Canoe Company catalog from 1900 listed Dan Herald’s double cedar canoe (center), which had a layer of canvas sandwiched between two layers of cedar planking. The canoe was smooth-skinned inside and out, but difficult to repair. It was invented in 1871 near Peterborough, Ontario.
