After independence, Swiss Mission properties were nationalized by the Frelimo government. During the war, Antioka sheltered large numbers of displaced families from the surrounding countryside and served for a time as a government garrison, but it was also the target of brutal Renamo attacks aimed as much at destroying church property as at terrorizing soldiers and civilians.
