This report was compiled during the academic year of 2019-2020 for the University of Michigan (U-M) President's Commission on Carbon Neutrality by the Commuting Internal Analysis Team. Through its work, the Commuting Internal Analysis Team developed an approach to measure the carbon impact of the university commute to U-M’s three campuses. The team also studied approaches used by peer institutions to determine best practices for reducing the carbon impact of the commute.

This report adapts peer institution best practices and outlines five prioritized recommendations to reduce U-M emissions from the faculty, staff and student commute. The recommendations focus on lowering existing incentives for reliance on solo car travel and on removing obstacles to personal vehicle alternatives.

This publication is a result of work sponsored by the U-M President’s Commission on Carbon Neutrality to inform the PCCN’s final recommendations to U-M President Mark Schlissel. This publication does not reflect Commission-level recommendations and should not be interpreted as being recommendations of the PCCN nor carrying its endorsement.
