The seven chapters in this volume were delivered at a cycle of lectures presented (at the Winckelmann-Institut der Humboldt-Universität) in Berlin over the winter of 1998/99. Concentrating on the Roman era, four contributions focus on the impact of Romansettlement in the 'Northwestern Provinces' (Britain, Germany, Gaul, and the Low Countries), and three discuss aspects of Roman life in the Danube Provinces (Moesia/Lower Danube, Apulum/Alba Iulia, and Caracalla/Dacia.).
