Pierre and Paul-Jacques Curie's électroscope. The two brothers discovered the phenomenon of piezoelectricity, in which some crystals when compressed in particular directions show positive and negative charges on their surface. The charges are proportional to pressure and disappear when the pressure is released. Applying this phenomenon, they constructed a new apparatus, which measured in absolute terms small quantities of electricity. Source: Le Radium, September 15, 1904, 183.
